This simple test can help kids hear better | Susan Emmett

https://download.ted.com/talks/SusanEmmett_2017G-480p.mp4?apikey=172BB350-0008Children who live in rural areas can have a hard time getting to the doctor — much less to an audiologist’s clinic for expensive, complex tests to check their hearing. The result for too many kids is hearing loss caused by ear infections and other curable or preventable problems. That’s why ear surgeon and TED Fellow Susan Emmett is working with 15 communities in rural Alaska to create a simple, low-cost test that only requires a cell phone. Learn more about her work and how it could change the lives of children who don’t have access to hearing care.

78: What if mad scientists had to wear diapers and if you wish for something you got it right beside you?

Professor Mooshpants and Dr. Nozetal are some of What If World’s maddest scientists. They also happen to be among the youngest. Can the brilliant baby and precocious puppy work together to free themselves from a maximum security day care? Or will they have to wait until their parents pick them up?!

Lessons include: time flies when you stay engaged and challenged; good friends try out each other’s favorite things and grow in the process!

Schools Out for Little Hedgehog: A Story for Kids

LITTLE HEDGEHOG T-SHIRTS are now available! OMG. Big people, don’t worry – I speak in code about this in the actual episode. I’m fairly certain your tiny people will not know the words ‘merchandise’ and ‘protagonist’. If they do, I am super impressed! Go to the new ‘Shop’ tab at http://www.littlestoriestinypeople.com or you can head over to my threadless store at http://littlestoriestinypeople.threadless.com to choose from two adorable designs.

Little Hedgehog is BACK for a school’s out episode. Little Hedgehog has big plans for summer break and she leads her dad and Bebe on a ridiculous adventure. Enjoy!

Also, Mr. Eric from What If World appears as MR. HEEDGEHOG! Do not even think about confusing him with a hedgehog. He has 2 E’s in his name and he is quite proud.

You can hear me on the latest episode of What If World as I help Mr. Eric tell a very wacky story based on listeners’ ‘what if’ questions. Find What If World wherever you get your podcasts.

The wonderful weirdness of water

One of the weirdest substances in the universe is right under your nose. No, not boogers. Water! Water seems ordinary, almost boring, but take a closer look and you’ll find a wonderfully weird molecule that behaves like nothing else in the universe. It can move up against gravity. It can absorb lots of heat energy without getting super hot. It can dissolve almost anything. It carves canyons and quenches our thirst. Why is water so weird, and why does that matter?
